My country

My country is Sri Lanka. It is a beautiful island in the Indian Ocean. The capital of Sri Lanka is Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte. It has a hot and wet climate. Tea, rubber and coconut are the main crops. Tea is grown in the hill country. Paddy and coconuts are grown in the coastal areas. Our president is Hon. Mahinda Rajapaksa. Our Prime Minister is
D. M. Jayaratne.

Mahaweli, Kalu, Kelani and Walawe are the four main rivers. Mahaweli is the longest river. Pidurutalagala is the highest mountain. There are beautiful waterfalls, rivers, streams and tea estates in the hill country.

Sinhalese, Tamils, Muslims and Burghers live in Sri Lanka. Most of the people are Buddhists. I love my country.

My trip to the fisheries harbour

I went to the Beruwala Fisheries Harbour last Sunday. I went with my father and sister to buy some fish for home. I got up early in the morning and got ready.

We went there by 6 a.m. At that time several boats were there and some small ships were coming to anchor in the harbour. I saw the lighthouse too. I saw a lot of varieties of fish. Some had big fins and some had small ones and those fishes were different colours and sizes.

The harbour was very noisy, crowded and busy. I saw seer fish, tuna, crabs, prawns, cuttlefish etc. Some fishes were even bigger than me! There were some people to cut the fish into small pieces. My dad bought some fish and put it in a big basket and we came home. I enjoyed my trip very much.

A fantastic vacation

It was time for us to have some fun and entertainment! On December 14, we were on our way to Diyathalawa with some relations and friends. As we reached Diyathalawa, it was misty and we were almost freezing! We stayed at the Navy bungalow which was marvellous and very beautiful. We had some tasty food and afterwards went for some walks in the cold weather.

The next morning, we went to Bogoda Raja Maha Viharaya, which was a bridge which crossed to the other side where there was a large waterfall. We had some fun with the freezing water and then went to the temple and heard about how and when the bridge was built. In the evening we played badminton in the foggy weather which was exciting.

Then we made our way to the ‘Haven of Tranquility’ in the hills, called Adisham bungalow in Haputale. Adisham was a stately stone mansion built in 1931 by Sir Thomas Lister Villiars, an English planter. This mansion was purchased by the Sylvestro-Benedictine monks in 1961 to serve as their noviciate, where those who seek to enter the monastic life are trained. I really found it very educational and interesting.

We came back to the bungalow and we played cards in the night. The next day on our way to Colombo we saw Ravana Ella which came down with a great pressure of water after the rains. I was sad that it was the end of a memorable trip.
