Jayawickrama, found that there is a lack of a Madya Maha Vidyalaya close to Weligama, he made a huge effort to initiate a school at the village Kathakuwa.

As a result Minister John Kothalawela was able to lay the foundation stone in 1951. The first stage of the construction was completed in 1956 and the school was declared open by the former Education Minister M.D.Banda as Kathaluwa Higher Secondary School. The students were admitted to the school by a competitive examination and 241 students were selected for the first batch. The founder principal was K. M. C. De Alwis.

The college sailed into a new chapter with the recognition given to the school as Kathaluwa Madya Maha

Vidyalaya in 1980. As the request of the former principal M. M. W. Weerarathna, a well wisher of the province donated a two storeyed

building and a shrine room in 1983.

Today the school has earned national school status and is functioning as a 6 to 13 school. It

consists of more than 600 students and about 52 teachers in the staff. It has a highly developed and efficient administrative system. Devolution is essential for smooth management. The present Principal, Samarasiri Wewalwala, with assistance from the Deputy Principal, manages the entire school through delegation of powers to different sectional heads.

Students of Kathaluwa MMV carry admiration for their alma-mater each year in presenting their talents in the public examinations. They sustain first rate academic

records at G.C.E.(O/L) and G.C.E.(A/L) examinations and shaped thousands of successful personalities.

Since its inception, the school has screened the talent of its students in sports, music, dancing and drama and Sinhala and English day competitions. Kathaluwa MMV is renowned for athletics and elle, having victories at all-island and provincial levels. P. G. Nirmali Nadushika, who represented the school for the 2012 All-Island School Athletic Meet, bagged the Under 17 400 meters first place and 200 meters third place. She also brought fame to the college by emerging first in the Sir John Tarbet Athletic meet in 2012. The Boys’ Under 19 Elle team brought many provincial victories and awards to their alma-mater.

The music, dancing and drama troupe of the college annually bring provincial and district places to the college. The dancing group

A number of clubs and societies operate with the intention of tweaking and establishing the skills of the students. The environmental corps, first aid unit and science, commerce, arts and Buddhist societies handle the major responsibilities of the school functions and day-to-day operations.

They are the proud say that they annually organize a unique cultural programme called Dhivayuru Abhimuwa and in 2012 they organized the same for the third time.

The famous singer, Victor Rathnayake was invited as the chief guest for the hugely successful event.

The handcraft of the school under the theme ‘Govipala ha Thotupola’ placed first in the village industry and craft competition organized by the Koggala Martine Wickramasinghe conventional centre.

During the past 56 years, Kathaluwa students have made an exceptional contribution to the nation in various professional and academic spheres such as professors, doctors, engineers, politicians, forces, lawyers and sportsmen.

The schools are judged by the behaviour and the knowledge of the students while being as students at school and later in society. In order to achieve this, they have their mission of developing their attitude, skills and knowledge, learning to accept responsibility and to make decisions.
