The Hirdaramani Group won the opening fixture of the Mercantile Football Association ‘A’ division knockout championship when they beat Ceylinco Insurance by five goals to one, at the CR and FC grounds recently.

In the ninth minute of play, Ceylico Insurance opened the day’s scoring when centre forward Gayan Chandrasekera unleashed a powerful strike. However, in the 20th minute, Nimal Fernando equalised for the Hirdaramani Group when he converted a penalty and 10 minutes later centre forward M.S. Kaiz put Hirdaramani in the lead. In the 42nd minute, Kaiz repeated the performance to make it 3-1 for his side at halftime.

After the turnaround, Hirdaramani went further ahead when left winger R.D. Dulaj made it 4-1 in the 60th minute and 25 minutes later, Kaiz fired his third goal to give his team a 5-1 win.

The game was refereed by B.D. Basnayake, while A.G. Mendis was the co-ordinator and Anton Atapattu was the commissioner. (BM)

Colombo Dockyard register 2-0 win

Colombo Dockyard defeated Ceylon Business Appliances 2-0, in their Mercantile Football Association ‘B’ division knockout soccer fixture at the CR & FC grounds recently.

At halftime Colombo Dockyard held a 1-0 lead.

In the third minute of the game, midfielder K.A.S. Fernando put Dockyard one up.

After the change of ends, in the 40th minute, centre forward A.S. Nimesh made it 2-0 and sealed victory for Colombo Dockyard.
The game was refereed by Susantha Fernando, while A.G. Mendis was co-ordinator and Anton Atapattu was commissioner.

HSBC deposit 4 in win over SLT

HSBC rolled to an emphatic 4-0 win over Sri Lanka Telecom in their Mercantile Football Association ‘B’ division knockout football fixture at the CR and FC grounds recently.

At halftime the winners were in front with a `1-0 lead.

In the fifth minute of play, centre half Askar Ali put HSBC one up.

After the change of ends, Askar scored his second goal (2-0) before midfielder M.F. Jeevantha gave HSBC their third goal. The fourth and final goal was off the boot of winger P. Fernando in the 59th minute.

The game was controlled by R.S. Ratnayake.
