Janaka Ratnayake, chairman of the Sri Lanka Export Development Board (EDB), has resigned from his position.
Mr Ratnayake, chairman since 2010, came to the office on Tuesday and addressed staff saying he was resigning. On Wednesday, there was a farewell given by staff.

When contacted over the phone he said that he has tendered his resignation due to personnel reasons.

He noted that he has served the EDB for three years and now wants to continue his private business.

Mr Ratnayake said that his resignation comes in the wake of an impending cabinet reshuffle and the change in top government posts.
Trade union officials said the resignation came as a surprise while board members were also unaware. The EDB chairman figured in the recent impeachment motion against Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake where he was summoned to give evidence in issues relating to the purchase of an apartment at the Ceylinco Trillium Residencies. The EDB chairman, also Executive Director of Trillium residencies, told the Parliamentary Select Committee probing the impeachment that a discount of Rs 1.6 million was given in this particular transaction.

But Mr Ratnayake said that his resignation has nothing to do with the impeachment case.

He also served as the chairman of Merchant Bank of Sri Lanka (MBSL) which managed the failed Finance and Guarantee Company of Ceylinco group.
