The 18th session of the United Nation’s Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP18/CMP8) opened in Doha on Monday, November 26.

For the next 12 days, leaders from 194 countries debated the future of the planet, considering amongst other things carbon emission reductions, sustainable development and a green climate fund.

Chathushka Amarasinghe, a Girl Guide from Sri Lanka, was selected to be part of the 10-member delegation representing the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS) at COP18.

Chathushka was invited to join a panel of eminent lecturers and UNICEF representatives at a side event organized by the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) to contribute to a discussion on ‘Education and Climate Change’.

Chathushka spoke of the benefits of non-formal education in educating on climate change and the key role played by WAGGGS in their stewardship of 10 million girls and young women across the globe. She went on to share her own experiences of climate change education through Guiding, stressing on the value of “learning by doing”.
