calendar. Still dear readers, you should think of 2012 as a year worth remembering. Humanity had more than its fair share of terrible tragedies, but we also had amazing, truly historic moments. What will you remember about 2012? Here are some of the things we think are worth recalling.

God Bless the Queen: The Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II marks the 60th anniversary of her accession to the thrones of the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, and the 60th anniversary of her becoming Head of the Commonwealth.

March 13, 2012 Goodbye Britannica: After 244 years since its first publication, the Encyclopædia Britannica discontinues its print edition.

June 5 – 6, 2012 Hello Venus:

The century’s second and last solar transit of Venus occurs. The next pair are predicted to occur in 2117 and 2125.

R.I.P George:

Lonesome George, the last known individual of the Pinta Island Tortoise subspecies, dies at a Galapagos National Park, thus making the subspecies extinct.

July 4, 2012

The God Particle: CERN announces the discovery of a new particle with properties consistent with the Higgs boson after experiments at the Large Hadron Collider.

July 15, 2012  The World Goes Gangnam Crazy:

South Korean artist Psy, releases his song Gangnam Style which becomes one of the most popular songs in 2012.

The song refers to the Gangnam District of Seoul but is a favourite with the likes of Google’s executive chairman Eric Schmidt, Australia’s former Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, the British Prime Minister David Cameron, and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon, who hails the song as a “force for world peace.”

The 2012 Summer Olympics are held in London, More than 10,000 athletes from 204 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) participated. London is the first city to host the modern Olympic Games three times.

In the US, opinions are divided over whether the attacks are a reaction to a Youtube trailer for the film ‘Innocence of Muslims’.

Sri Lanka hosts the ICC World Cup:

The Fourth ICC World Twenty20 competition takes place in Sri Lanka.

Winner, The West Indies do the Gangnam dance on the field after their victory.

October 14, 2012 Breaking the Sound Barrier:

Austrian skydiver Felix Baumgartner becomes the first person to break the sound barrier without any machine assistance during a record space dive out of the Red Bull Stratos helium-filled balloon.

October 24 – 30, 2012,

In the Eye of a Hurricane:

Hurricane Sandy kills at least 209 people in the Caribbean, Bahamas, United States and Canada. Considerable storm surge damage causes major disruption to the eastern seaboard of the United States.

November 14 – 21 2012, Gaza Under Fire:

Israel launches Operation Pillar of Defense against the Palestinian-governed Gaza Strip, killing Hamas military chief Ahmed Jabari. In the following week 140 Palestinians and five Israelis are killed in an ensuing cycle of violence. A ceasefire between Israel and Hamas is announced after the week-long
escalation in hostilities in Southern Israel and the Gaza Strip.

November 25 – December 2, 2012 Pablo in the Philippines:

Typhoon Bopha, known as “Pablo” in the Philippines, kills at least 1020 with around 844 people still missing.
