Christmas

We celebrate Christmas on December 25. Christians and Catholics celebrate Christmas. They buy plastic trees and decorate them nicely. They decorate trees with small bells, plastic balls and small toy Santas. They place a stay on the top of the tree.

Children around the world believe that Santa brings them nice gifts. They love Santa carrying a big bag full of toys. Christmas is a very joyful day.

Value of trees

Trees are part of the earth. The earth is the house in which trees, humans and other living things such as animals live in.

Trees can produce their own food. Trees give us valuable food and medicine for our survival. Our duty is to grow more trees and protect them. Trees take in carbon dioxide and purify the air. They produce oxygen for others. Trees help to prevent soil erosion.

So, just as we try to protect ourselves, similarly we must take care to protect trees as well.

When I grow up

It feels really amazing to think about the future. When I grow up, I want to become a scientist. It has always been a great dream of mine to see myself as a scientist one day.

If I become a scientist, I will experiment on animals, insects and of course on humans! I will observe the tiny living creatures called micro-organisms under an electron microscope. I will discover specific medicines to cure different diseases and I will also deal attentively with harmful chemicals and acids. I will examine more on metallic substances such as sodium, potassium and magnesium and explore extra facts on scientific elements such as carbon monoxide, sodium carbonate, hydrochlorides and hydroxides. I will analyze natural substances such as synthetic fibres, cotton, rubber and plastics too.

When I become a scientist, I will create a new world of science and make my country proud of me. I will be awarded with Nobel prizes too. My parents would be very happy about me and I hope that my dream will come true.

The peaceful Pearl of the Indian Ocean

My country is Sri Lanka. It is also known as the ‘Pearl of the Indian Ocean.’ It is an island and is considered as the second most beautiful country. Sri Lanka’s first king was King Vijaya. He named my country ‘Thambapanni.’

The first capital of my country was Anuradhapura. The first king of Anuradhapura was King Pandukhabaya. His consort was Queen Swarnapali. Sri Lanka had eight capitals. They were Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambadeniya, Yapahuwa, Kurunegala, Gampaha, Kotte and Kandy.
My country was known by different names. Some of them were ‘Taprobane’ (by Arabians), Seelani (by Chinese) and Seylan (by Portuguese).

The national tree is the Na-tree, flower is the Blue water lily, game is volleyball and bird is the Jungle fowl. The capital is Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte and the commercial capital is Colombo. The main export crops are tea, rubber, coconut. In addition betel, flowers, fruits and vegetables are also exported.

My country gained freedom on February 4, 1948. Terrorism by the LTTE was defeated on May 19, 2009. I love my country very much.
