‘Budget Taxi’ links up with AMW to introduce Maruti Suzuki Alto cab service

‘Budget Taxi’, Sri Lanka’s taxi service provider affiliated to the All Island Three-Wheeler Drivers Union, has joined up with Associated Motorways PLC (AMW) to introduce a white coloured Maruti Suzuki Alto cab service in parallel to their existing Tata Nano taxis, officials of the company, said.

Budget Taxi Managing Director Kelum Jayasumana told the Business Times that the company plans to increase its taxi fleet to 1000, adding 520 Maruti Suzuki Alto cabs to the existing fleet of 480 Tata Nano taxis.

He revealed that the company will not go for Tata Nano cars in the future and their plan is to operate Maruti Suzuki Altos for the convenient of customers due to special features of good fuel efficiency, fair price, after sales services and readily available spare parts.
The aim is to provide a high standard of travelling, safety and comfort, specially catering to the growing needs of customers and rapid expansion demand from the tourism sector, he added.

The Budget Taxi services are currently confined to Colombo City but would soon expand to Kandy and Galle.

Budget Taxi has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with AMW for after sales services, vehicle maintenance, price advantage and many other facilities after purchasing Maruti Suzuki Altos from the company. The vehicles are being sold at pre- (2013) budget prices in a special deal with Budget Taxi.

Mr Jayasumana said the Maruti Alto is the best-selling car in Sri Lanka due to many special features .

Budget Taxi had grown within a short span of three years to become the leading three-wheel and four-wheel metered taxi service, he disclosed.

Mr. Jayasumana said that their company which operates on a partnership basis will advise its partners to purchase Maruti Altos to enter into its metered cab service.

Three Wheel Lanka Pvt Ltd, another subsidiary of the union operates 1500 3-wheel budget taxis, he said. The 3-wheel service is operated across the island with 100 call centres and 500 youth employed in these centres.

AMW Group Managing Director Samantha Rajapaksa, told a media conference held in Colombo recently that the Budget Taxi entered into a strategic partnership with his company to purchase Suzuki Maruti Alto to provide a total transport service countrywide. Since its introduction Suzuki Maruti has become popular due to continuous improvements to its models and upgraded features, he said.
