Two Police teams are investigating the killing of a 33-year-old bachelor in Kotakethana, Kahawatte. Kotakethana, in the Ratnapura disctrict, has been the scene of a series of killings of women, going back to 2008.

The body of Ukwattage Abeya Priyantha was found on the Opatha road at around 11 p.m. on Friday. A Special Investigation Task Force team found bloodstains in an isolated house close to where the body was discovered. It is believed that the victim Priyantha had been killed in the house.

The victim and two others were arrested as suspects in the murder of Ms. Ariyawathi on November 19, 2008. They were later released after Court found no evidence to link them to the murder.
Chaminda Jayasinghe, brother of Priyantha, told the Sunday Times that his brother had been working at a gem mine in Kahawatte.

“As a number of women had been killed in Kotakethana, my brother did not want to leave the village and leave our mother alone,” Mr. Jayasinghe told the Sunday Times. “The two men who were arrested with my brother assaulted him a few years ago. As a result of political influence, no complaint was made to the Police. My brother had no other enemies,” he said.

The Police say the motive for killing Priyantha may have been to conceal information relating to the 2008 murder of Ms. Ariyawathi.

Abeya Priyantha died from head injuries inflicted by a sharp object, said Palmadulla Acting Magistrate Dharmasiri Manipura.
