Batsman Usman Khawaja will commence his bid for a return to the Australian Test XI next week, when he captains the Chairman’s XI against the touring Sri Lankans at the Manuka Oval in Canberra.

Thursday saw the veteran Ricky Ponting announce he will retire from international cricket at the conclusion of the series against South Africa, reopening the door for Khawaja’s inclusion.

Dropped after six Tests in 2011, when he averaged a mere 29.22 against England, the Proteas, Sri Lanka and New Zealand, the 25-year-old left-hander has enjoyed a fine stretch of form in first-class cricket for Queensland this season.

“Usman has been nominated as captain. He has have been released from his Big Bash League franchises to take this opportunity to further his experience in the longer form of the game,” said national selector John Inverarity.

Australia and Sri Lanka will meet for three Tests, the first of which gets underway in Hobart on 14 December. Melbourne and Sydney will host matches two and three respectively. – Cricket365
