Riyan Perera - Man of the match, hitting one of his boundaries

All-rounder Riyan Perera continued his superb form with the bat, as well as with the ball, to steer St. Peter’s College Colombo to the Inter-Schools Under-15 Division I Cricket Championship.

St. Peter’s beat Mahanama College Colombo by four wickets to win the coveted title. This was the third occasion St. Peter’s won this championship in five years under the guidance of their long-standing coach L.H. Sunil.

At the final played against Mahanama, the Peterites showed their prowess on the field as they

Dinuka Karunananda - Best bowler

skittled out their opponents for a meagre total of 86. Mahanama’s cricketers were forced to defend as they faced 42.1 overs to pile up a somewhat vulnerable total. The only batsman to stand out against a devastating bowling attack by St. Peter’s was Niduka Welikala, who hit a brave 15 as he failed to find a fitting partner to build up a respectable total for his team. Thanula Wickramasinghe too played a resilient knock but he could not succeed beyond 11 runs. Chathura Obeysekara, Ravindu Silva and Ayantha de Silva who grabbed two wickets each, were the Peterite wreckers who brought down the Mahanama batting proficiency.

Though a possible win was on the cards for the Peterites, chasing the meagre target was not as easy

as it seemed. They lost wickets at regular intervals despite reaching 50 runs at a rapid speed with top-order batsman Ashan Wanasekara chipping in with a valuable knock of 24 runs. During the final 20 runs, St. Peter’s lost wickets at regular intervals and were seen succumbing to the pressure applied by the Mahanama bowlers. But resilient Riyan Perera stood firm in the middle and made sure St. Peter’s reached the winning target, despite losing partners at the other end. Perera hit a magnificent unbeaten 24 while erasing all doubt, with a boundary that sealed the St. Peter’s victory. They reached 90 runs after losing six wickets with 20 overs to spare. Shelon Rodrigo made a useful 13 while left-arm spinner Dinuka Karunananda took three wickets after conceding 28 runs. Karunananda was later named the best bowler of the final. St. Peter’s grabbed two of the three main awards. One of them, the Best Batsman’s award was claimed by Ashan Wanasekara while match-winner Riyan Perera, who also claimed a wicket, in addition to his contribution with the bat, was adjudged the Man-of-the-Match.
