Galle district dominate 2012 Southern Province games
Galle district with 1276 points dominated the Southern Province Games which concluded at the Uyanwatta stadium.
Athletes who represented the Galle district with theire haul of trophies
Matara district took second place with 566 points and Hambantota district were third with 512 points. Galle were champions in Netball, Kabaddi (Men and women), Football (men and Women), Badminton (men and Women), Basketball (men and women), Swimming (men and women), Athletics (men), Elle (women), Cycling (men), Gymnastics (women), and cricket(softball) for women.
The track and field championship was held at the Uyanwatta Stadium in Matara. Track and field events scheduled for two days were worked off on a single day due to the rescheduling of the National Athletic Championship.
K D Sumesh Lakshitha Wickremasinghe of Hambantota district and K A D Sandakanthi of Galle district were adjudged the champion male and female athletes of the Southern Province.
No new records were established. Galle district won the overall Athletics championship with 218 points with Hambantota district taking second place with 202 points an Matara district were third with 143. In the men’s athletics events Galle district dominated with 112 points, Matara district were second with 96 and Hambantota district third with 76.
In the women’s athletics events Hambantota took first place with 126 points to Galle district’s 106 and Matara district’s 47 points.
