The 5th Annual Royal- Thomian Badminton Encounter will be held at the S. Thomas’ Sports Complex on 10th November 2012 commencing from 2.00 pm onwards. The two teams will vie for the under – 19, & 16 titles.

The inaugural encounter was held in 2007 and continued without a break in 2008, 2009 & 2010. The encounter in 2011 was not held. The tally now remains with 2 wins for Royal and 2 wins for S. Thomas’.

The highlight of the evening will be the Under 19 encounter where the two rivals will vie for the Ranil Wijesekera Memorial Challenge Trophy donated by Dr. A.R.L. & Mrs Nanda Wijesekera in memory of their son.

The late Ranil Wijesekera ,a brilliant Royalist who excelled in both academic and sports field captained the Badminton team and went on to win the National Men’s Doubles Titles and thereafter went on to represent Sri Lanka at the Thomas Cup tie along with his younger brother Niranjan.

The occasion will be graced by the Chief Guest Mr. Tony Perera — a distinguished old Thomian who represented S. Thomas’ in Cricket, Tennis and Badminton. Further he captained the Ceylon Badminton Team in the 1st International School Boys Championships held at the Panagoda Army Gymnasium in August 1967.

The Under 14 encounter will commence at 2.00 pm followed by the Under 16 and culminating with the prestigious Under 19 encounter for the Ranil Wijesekera Memorial Challenge Trophy – the main Championship award of the encounter.
