S. Thomas’ College, Mount Lavinia and Trinity College, Kandy were declared joint champions after they held each other to a nil-all draw, in their third football encounter at Mount Lavinia recently.

The annual fixture was first played in 2010 and ended in a draw, while the Trinitians defeated the Thomians by 3-2 in an exciting finish last year.

Both sides missed golden opportunities of scoring due to their haphazard shooting. The main offenders being the Thomians, who squandered more than a dozen chances,

In the third minute of play the Thomians missed a sitter before muffing up another three opportunities during the opening half. The Trinitians too were guilty of similar offences, though they had fewer chances than their opponents.

Before the first half ended, the Thomians were to miss another easy goal when the Trinitian custodian was caught on the wrong foot which left the goal wide open.

Both goalkeepers Lakshman Sivasubramaniam of S. Thomas’ and C. Dissanayake of Trinity did an excellent job between the posts, with the latter pulling off a brilliant save while being airborne.

The trophy will remain at Mount Lavinia for six months before being moved to Kandy.

The game was controlled by M.N.M. Muzamil.

Earlier in the day, the under 15 and 13 fixtures too ended in nil-all draws.

In the Under 15 fixture, S. Thomas’ were led by striker Dion Dias and Trinity by centre defender D.D. Ediriweera,

In the Under 13 fixture, striker Dinil Gonawela led the Thomians while defender M.N. Divyan skippered the Trinitians. (BM)
