Mahanama College is looking to go beyond the semifinals of the Under 15 division one schools cricket tournament this year. The team led by Thanula Wickremasinghe will go all out to create history with a win against Lumbini College Colombo to become the first Mahanamian team to reach the final of the schools under 15 Division One tournament.

They were unfortunate because an attempt to play the semifinal on Wednesday (24) at the Panadura UC grounds was called off at 2.30pm due to rain.

Mahanama, batting first, were in a strong position with 137/3 on the board in the 31st over when the weather gods put an end to further play.

Vice Captain Sahan Pieris scored 37 while Chethaka Pullaperuma was unbeaten on 21. The match will be replayed this week.
Mahanama qualified for the semifinals with wins against St. Anthony’s Wattala, Ananda Sasthralaya Kotte, Moratu Vidyalaya and De Mazenod Kandana while losing to Ananda College Colombo and St. Sebastian’s College Moratuwa in the first round. They won all three matches in the second round defeating St. Mary’s Kegalle, S. Thomas’ College Mt Lavinia and Sri Sumangala College, Panadura.

In the pre quarterfinal they defeated Isipathana College Colombo and registered an exciting two-wickets win against Richmond College Galle in the quarter finals played at the Ananda College Grounds.

Mahanama’s under 15 Division One squad is led by Thanula Wickremasinghe and comprises Sahan Pieris (vice captain), Dinuka Karunanada, Yasiru Pieris, Niduka Welikala, Banuka Hennanayaka, Vimukthi Panditharathna, Ishara Rashmika (wicket keeper), Chethaka Pullaperuma, Pasindu Jayakody , Uvindu Kushmika, Vidath Hettiarachchi, Sanura Perera and Kavindu Munasinghe. The team is coached by Imal Botheju with Akila Madhusanka and Sandun Piris as his assistants.Dushmantha Ranasingha is head coach at the Mahanama Cricket Academy where the youngsters are taught the ABC’s of the game. Lakshman Waththegama is the master-in-charge of under 15 cricket.

Rusiru de Silva President of the Mahanama College Cricket Development Committee and Indunil Silva Vice President in charge of Sports of the Mahanama OBA are the driving forces behind the school’s success at cricket this year.
