Did you ever wonder where the bread for the sandwich your mom packs everyday comes from? The First Graders of Asian International School (AIS) were curious too and they actually went to a real bakery to see how bread is made.
‘Paan Paan’ is a bakery based at 84, Lorenz Road, Bambalapitiya where different varieties of bread are made. Bread originated in Mexico, Spain, Germany and many other countries is made there.

We found a Purple Wheat Bread which was actually purple in colour as it was made out of purple wheat from Africa!
When the Funday Times crew reached ‘Paan Paan’ the AIS students were already there and were making dough for some
delicious buns. Mixing flour with butter, yeast and baking powder, they made their own little creations.

“It was very interesting. I never knew how to make bread before and today I learnt how to make my own dough,” said Dukula Himanshu who told us that he was going to show his mother the procedure when he got home. Mariam Aliboy told us that she enjoyed making the dough with her friends. “We had a nice time  playing and dusting with the mixture. It was very interesting to see how bread is made,” she said.

Later we were taken around the bakery to see the technologically advanced ovens where the raw dough is put in to bake. But before our buns went into the oven we applied a little egg yolk on top to get the shine. Chef Jagath Wijesinghe helped us to do this just right and after all of us tried our hand at the art, our buns were ready for the oven. Chef Jagath opened the neat looking oven and placed the tray gently into it.

As the buns were being baked we could actually get the tantalizing smell which made our tummies grumble. After what seemed like a torturing half hour Chef Jagath helped to take the tray out, where the dull whitish dough had now turned into golden buns.

We put the hot buns into a bag with a muffin which was given to us by  Mr. Aboo Yusoof, the Director of Lanka Premier Foods (Pvt) Ltd., which runs ‘Paan Paan’.“The children enjoyed the time they spent with us. This was the first time they actually came to see how bread was made and only a few had actually gone to a bakery. This was a great opportunity for them to see the procedure and also try their hands at it,” said

Mr. Aboo. He also said that at ‘Paan Paan’ they encourage little kids like you to eat healthy bread which makes you healthier.
