Colombo University sixth at Varsity Boat Race

The oarsmen and oarswomen of Colombo University improved on their previous year’s performance by being olaced sixth, with a tally of 34 points, at the Varsity Boat Race, conducted by the University of Teknologi and the Ministry of Higher Education, at the Futrajaya Water Sports Complex in Malaysia recently.
A total of 37 universities participated in the regatta this year, of which 10 were from foreign countries.
The Colombo University teams consisted of 10 men, led by Prabath Perera and nine women led by Maryam Noordeen, Nayanthri Chandrasena and Senarath De Alwis acted the team managers, while the team was coached by Lloyd Sirimanne for the third successive year.
In the 2010 regatta, Colombo University was placed eighth out of 35 with 26 points and in 2011, took eighth place out of 35 with 17 points.
Both crews made it to the semifinals in all the events they entered, and from there into five on the final day.
The results that were achieved at this regatta by the University of Colombo were very creditable when taking into consideration that the University does not have any boats to accommodate crews of eight.
Results – Men
Won the bronze medal in the Double Sculls, out of nine rowers.
In the Scull M1X placed 5th out of 12.
In the Eights 8+, 5th place out of 15.
Women’s
Fifth in the Double Sculls out of nine crews.
Seventh in the Light Weight Double Sculls out of 11 cews.
Sixth in the Light Weight Fours out of 15 crews.
Seventh in the Eights out of 16 crews.
