Two Romanian nationals were picked up on Friday in connection with a multi-million rupee ATM card scam which they had operated undetected for the past one year, police said yesterday.

They said the pair was picked up from a location at Dehiwala by undercover police sleuths who had acted on a tip-off.

Initial investigations have revealed that the suspects ripped off some Rs. 2.3 million from unsuspecting account holders from banks located at Dehiwala, Mount Lavinia, Bambalapitiya and Wellawatte.
A total of 58 cleverly turned out ATM cards were also recovered from the suspects, police said.

According to police the suspects are believed to be a part of a wider group of foreign fraudsters operating with the connivance of certain locals and said that more arrests in this connection are likely in the next few days.

Dehiwala Police are conducting further investigations.
