Industry players in Ecotourism study tour/field trip

Sri Lanka Ecotourism Foundation (SLEF) recently concluded its latest academy project on Ecotourism Business Development (EBD) programme at the Sri Lanka Institute ofTourism and Hotel Management (Ceylon Hotel’s School) for the members of the industry.

The participants for EBD Programme was drawn from a cross section of travel and tourism industry in Sri Lanka such as travel and tourism Marketing/Planning executives and decision makers, Adventure and nature based tour operators, university students, Researchers, Practicing national tourist guide lecturers, guest houses, restaurants, Ecolodge owners, travel journalists in Electronic and Print media.

EBD is a fast track programme on Ecotourism Certification which covers 35 modules on all important areas related to ecotourism in 50 hours lecture/presentation series spreading over 2 (two) months.

Nearly 20 participants, who followed the EBD programme, and academics led by Palitha Gurusinghe, the President of SLEF and M. L. N. Lantra, Former Director Research & International Affairs at Sri Lanka Tourism were engaged in a field trip at the end of their class room sessions as the practical training on the field. It was a trip and overnight camping at the Bambarakanda Forest by the Babarakanda Water Fall, ecological trip to Samanala Weva project and finally ended at Walawe Nadee Excursion (WNEF).

During the Field Trip participants had an opportunity to study hydro power generation plant at Samanala Wewa, trekking in Bambarakanda Water Falls, camping by the Hirikatuoya close to non-Perial forest reserve at Belihuloya, visiting of Walawa Nadee Model Ecotourism Project and go on a jungle River Safari at Walawe River and visiting of an up market Ecolodge (Taragala) located in the vicinity of Kalametiya Strict Nature Reserve and Bird’s Sanctuary.

The field trip is an integral component of the EBD programme which meant to educate the participants on diverse subjects in Ecotourism such as Community Camping, Renewable Energy Sources, Forests and Wildlife Conservation, Ecolodges and Community Based Ecotourism Projects in Sri Lanka.

The field trip also has provided an excellent opportunity for the participants to gain a site-specific training, Networking and experience on ecotourism and sustainable tourism in Sri Lanka and worldwide.

Sri Lanka Ecotourism Foundation (SLEF) is the pioneer national ecotourism organization in Sri Lanka dedicated to promote academic aspects, Ecotourism Research, Training and Education and, community based tourism.
