The 12th intake of Professional Diploma in Teaching will commence at the end of September at British College of Applied Studies (BCAS) – Kandy Campus. Continuing a success story of seven years in teacher training and over a decade in providing higher education excellence, the course itself has undergone strategic developments where more emphasis on hands-on experience can be noted.

Basically the Professional Diploma in Teaching caters to those who aspire to a teaching career in primary education in the English medium. It is ideally suited for school leavers, those aiming for overseas teaching careers, as well as teachers who seek professional guidance and skills. The course provides them with all necessary knowledge for teaching in addition to techniques and best practices for delivering lessons and managing classrooms efficiently. The course also guides trainees to acquire the essential soft skills, which will boost their confidence and personality.

BCAS also facilitates a high calibre faculty who are experts from the Department of Education, consultants from the teacher training colleges as well as experienced teachers. High emphasis is given to hands-on experience to develop skills and talents of the trainees.

Furthermore, each trainee is given one to two months of teaching sessions, supervised by trainers, at one of the leading private schools in Kandy. They will also be engaged in extended activities including organising events, drama and puppetry and so forth. This helps them gain exposure to real classroom environment and effectively implement what they have learnt thus far. Best of all, they will also receive computer training along with an additional certificate to be added to their qualification.

The improved course structure is a total immersion programme where a certificate is awarded on successful completion. Apart from achieving a steady improvement in English proficiency the trainees will also gain additional skills necessary for prospective teachers.
The Professional Diploma in Teaching is an eight month comprehensive course conducted on weekends of intensive training. After successful completion of this course, the trainees are awarded an internationally recognised certificate from the renowned City & Guilds (UK). They can pursue up to Diploma or Advanced Diploma of City & Guilds via BCAS. The course encompasses nine modules complemented with a final project. The modules cover an array of important subjects including Psychology, Methodology, Personality Development, Trends in Education System (Sri Lanka and UK) as well as Advanced English among others. In addition, BCAS also organises workshops with external resource personnel for a wider exposure.

Teacher trainees at BCAS not only gain new skills but they are also offered opportunities to showcase them. This exposure allows them to discover time and again their own hidden talents, to conquer fear and shyness and challenge all impediments. The course also helps them to be creative and innovative. The final project allows them to observe a current system and suggest solutions for improvement.
After many years of success, BCAS has overseen the graduation of 11 batches and successfully producing hundreds of trained teachers.

Most of them are already teaching at leading international schools in Sri Lanka as well as in overseas schools including Maldives and Middle East. In addition, the Diploma certificate is quite useful for those who are planning to migrate to countries like UK, Australia and New Zealand. Among their countless success stories there are some teachers who have opened up their own education institutes such as the popular School Bus Montessori in Kandy. The excellence of one’s students is the pride of an alma mater, and BCAS is no exception to receiving compliments time and again from the colleagues, seniors and principals of their alumni.

Whilst keeping up with industry standards and demands, BCAS hopes to take teacher training to new heights than ever before. And so the future generation of trained teachers under the guidance of BCAS can look forward to a rewarding career in education with confidence, anywhere in the world.
