The Malaysian Education Exhibition 2012 was held on the 15th and 16th of September 2012. The exhibition was declared open by the chief guest, His Excellency Azmi Zainuddin, the Malaysian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka.

The Malaysian Education Exhibition, organised by International Scholar Educational Services, brought together thirteen Malaysian universities in one location. Four of these universities were international universities with branch campuses located in Malaysia, namely, University of Nottingham, Curtin University, Swinburne University and Monash University. Five of the universities that were present are also ranked as tier 5 universities, which is the highest ranking given to any Malaysian private university.

His Excellency Azmi Zainuddin said “Currently Malaysian education is being promoted internationally as Malaysia has been recognised as one of the top countries for education, especially in Asia. This is because Malaysia provides a good quality education; the universities are monitored by higher education authorities and also by independent ranking guides thus ensuring that students gain the maximum from their educational experience”. His Excellency further added “we want to facilitate student learning in Malaysia so higher education is more accessible to them”. The Malaysian High Commissioner to Sri Lanka was thankful for the organisation of such an event that displayed the many study options available through the universities.

Malaysia has proven to be a popular study option for many Sri Lankan students when weighing the prospects of tertiary education . “The Malaysian culture is similar to that of Sri Lanka and Malaysia is also not too far so students can travel home during the holidays. It is a cost effective study location, where students have the option of gaining an Australian or British degree at a fraction of the cost” said Mr. Mohanraj, from Winning Magnitude, the Malaysian education partner of International Scholar Educational Services (ISES). He further added that in comparison, living expenses in Malaysia too were not as high.

The Malaysian Education Exhibition saw the representative universities offering study option for Undergraduate, Post-graduate, Foundation as well as Diploma stages. Some of the universities also had scholarships on offer for high achieving students and students had the choice of applying for admission at the event itself. In addition to the education exhibition ISES also hosts university representatives of Malaysian universities throughout the year.

“Obtaining a student permit for studies in Malaysia is a very simple procedure, and does not require vast documentation” said Mr. Keerthi Jayasuriya “this is another major factor that students choose Malaysia as a study destination. ISES has strong links with the Malaysian High Commission and we work closely with the high commission in handling the visa process so that students obtain the study permits in time”.

The Malaysian Education Exhibition is a biannual event where the exhibition is organised in March and September of each year. The next such exhibition is scheduled to be held in March 2013. Joanne Kotelawala.
