Mr. D.M.D. Dissanayake principal of D.S. Senanayake College Colombo-07 says that, under the new education reforms, the Aim of education is to make a future generation with integrated personality, student centered and activity oriented skills. The present new education reforms hopes to produce talented students and not merely certificate carriers when leaving school. The teachers are required to identify the skills required for tomorrow’s world during teacher learning process and not simply produce “Book Worms” with no analytical skills. The new teaching method is done with the objective of developing students to cope up with the requirement for future employment in the rapid changing environment. According to the new teaching process in the classroom, three types of skills are developed for students.

  •  Thinking Skills
  •  Social Skills
  •  Personal Skills
We need to understand the type of skills required by the children during the learning process. “What should be done today, to be their tomorrow”?
We need to promote students to explore new areas with the changing needs of the education environment.
  •  Thinking Skills
  • Logical Thinking
  •  Creative Thinking
  •  Critical Thinking
  •  Decission Making
  •  Problem Solving
  •  Conflict Resolution
  • Social Skills
  •  Empathetic Listening
  •  Teamwork Ability
  •  Communication Skills
  •  Interpersonal Skills
  •  Personal Skills
  •  Initiative Skills
  • Responsibility and Accountability

The teachers have the responsibility to build the above skills in the teacher learning process in the classroom. The teacher is a resource person and a facilitator in the class room. The creative teacher has to be open minded and guide the students to discover new thinking in the learning process. The teacher should come to the classroom as a stress free person. The teachers need to follow the following on behalf of the students.

He/She writes term notes and  plans students activities in general. A well planned teacher will cover up the syllabus on time without giving excuses.Following student centered, activity oriented; competency based learning teaching process in the class room.

Select the best approach to engage in the lesson
Pay attention to all the students in the classroom, show kindness, get feedback and feed forward programs.
Come to the classroom on time, be responsible and be a model
Bring new technology and create attractive classrooms for students.

Make classroom stress free for students
The teachers who possess the above characteristics are capable of producing good citizens to the country. Teaching is a respectable profession. “Discipline originates from the Teachers” the teachers should set an example to the students the importance of discipline and behaviour in schools and the outside world. The relation ship of a teacher and student is tantamount to a mother and child.

Today D.S. Senanayake College has brought fame to the state school  in the Island as a well disciplined educational institution. A teacher is expected to call a student son (putha) at D.S.Senanayake College. It is inculcated from the inception. We are instrumental in following the new education reforms set by the education department with the assistance of all the teachers, at a speedy space.
Says the principal Mr.D.M.D.Dissanayake.
