Battle Royal for top slots at TMC’s Wisdom Quiz

Royal College Colombo bagged the top slot among the 11 school teams that took part in the TMC- ICTA Wisdom 2012 Quiz competition held at the Galle Face Hotel – last Sunday 16th September, having competed alongside 45 other teams from the Mercantile Sector, Banking Sector and teams formed by independent groups.

They also emerged as the Joint Third placed team in the overall ranking, together with the team led by Indika Jayasinghe, establishing their prowess in the Quiz arena once again.

It was a tough battle for the top slots as usual at the TMC Wisdom Quiz. At the end of the six rounds of questions based on – Current Affairs, Sports, General Knowledge, Space & Astronomy & Arts/Literature and Entertainment and the Olympic Games – each round consisting of 10 questions, Royal and Indika Jayasinghe’s teams tied for the 3rd place while the teams led by Vindana Ariyawansa and Ranjana Senanayake had equal marks for the fifth place.

The organisers, therefore had to conduct two tie breaker rounds, even after which the tie for the 3rd place could not be resolved, thus making them joint winners of that position.

An independent team led by Chamara Sumanapala bagged the top award at TMC Wisdom 2012 Quiz , which had an unprecedented number of 46 teams taking part this year.

Other members who made up his team were Mewan Aluthbaduge, Praveen Samarawickrama, Vajira Lasantha and Thilina Galappaththy They were awarded the TMC-ICTA Wisdom Challenge Trophy and Rs 100,000/- in cash plus certificates. Organised jointly with the International Quizzing Association’s , the TMC Quiz this year was supported by the ICT Agency of Sri Lanka, CMI Sri Lanka Branch, Link Natural Products, Imperial Institute of Higher Education, ICBT Campus, Amana Insurance and Peoples Bank.

Incidentally teams from Royal College had been very dominant in the TMC Wisdom Quiz, throughout the series. They were the overall winners in the inaugural Quiz in 2006, won the top slot for school sector in 2008, and 2009 and also the joint winners with Dharmaraja in 2011

Royal College who fielded two teams at the Quiz as they have most often done in this competition, had D T S Kasun as their captain and Asitha Kuruppu, Dilshan Uthpal, Archanatah Dickwella and Nimsara Seneviratne teaming up as winners.

It was encouraging to see two other schools, namely Ananda and Musaeus also fielding two teams each, at the Quiz this time. Richmond College Galle, who were the second best team among the schools Dharmaraja College Kandy, Nalanda, Wycherley International and Ladies College taking part for the first time made up the rest of the 11 schools teams.

‘All Thurstanites’ another team of individuals led by Sisira Mark Antony and comprising of Srimal Ratnasinghe, Sreen Boralessa, Madushka Sooriyabandara and Geevantha Weerasinghe all past captains of Thurstan Colege Quiz teams, emerged as Runners up for a second consecutive year and were awarded a cash prize of Rs 50,000/= plus a trophy & certificates

Hatton National Bank who fielded two teams won the banking sector award whilst the top slot in the Mercantile category was won by Dialog Axiata. Others who competed in the banking category were Seylan Bank and Peoples Bank with 2 teams each, Commercial Bank, NDB and DFCC who took part in this quiz for the first time

Aitken Spence Cargo, Amba Stormfly, Amba Night Fury and Amba Windwalkers all from Amba Reserch Interblocks, Srilankan Airlines together with first time partcipants Astron Ltd , 99X Technology, Triad, eMarketingEye, CIC Holdings and Hirdaramanis Intellectuals were the teams that competed for the mercantile sector award.

The competition was open to 04 sectors – Schools & Educational Institutions, Mercantile Sector, Banks & Financial Institutions & Teams of Individuals and it was encouraging to see 10 new teams entering the fray this year.

A notable feature in the Quiz was that all contestants received a certificate of participation, while all schools teams were awarded book vouchers to the value of Rs 2500/= courtesy CMI Sri Lanka Branch and also gift vouchers with the compliments of DSI.

Highly rated as one of the best table quiz competitions in Sri Lanka, the questions – compiled by founder member of TMC and Sri Lanka’s representative of the International Quizzing Association UK, Ruwan Senanayake – were of a very high standard as usual and generated much enthusiasm in the audience and the participants alike with visuals and video clips also being a part of some questions in every round.
