Maximum exemptions offered by ACCA for the BSc accounting (special) degree programme

University Of Sri Jayewardenepura
ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants), UK, the largest and fastest growing global professional accountancy body, offers exemptions in 9 out of 14 subjects to the students who have completed the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, which is the first academic degree in accounting offered in the university system in Sri Lanka. This positions the graduates of B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Programme to complete only five subjects of the final stage of ACCA examinations to obtain the full ACCA qualification. This is the highest level of exemptions received by an accounting degree programme of a Sri Lankan university from ACCA.

The B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree of the Faculty of Management Studies and Commerce, University of Sri Jayewardenepura was introduced with the guiding philosophy of producing employable quality graduates who satisfy the requirements of the employment market.

The salient features of the degree program include a two-year internship (practical training) component as part of the Degree curricula, Information Technology relevant to Computer Accounting course units, and conduct of the program in the English medium with emphasis on developing business communication skills of students. In addition, continuous revision of syllabi and introduction of latest computer packages to suit the new developments in accounting have been continued..

Under the present degree structure of the Department, students who want to follow the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree should follow a common curriculum in management in the first year of study. This is intended to provide the core business knowledge by teaching the basic concepts in all functional areas in business. In the second year, students are admitted to the B.Sc. Accounting (Special) Degree Program to specialize in Accounting based on their preference and performance at the G.C.E (Advanced Level).

ACCA delivers qualifications in partnership with many organizations and works closely with nearly 400 registered tuition providers and over 6,500 employers of accountants and finance professionals globally. ACCA's reputation is grounded in over 100 years of providing accounting and financial qualifications. A student doing ACCA also has the unique advantage of gaining the B.Sc. Honours Degree in Applied Accounting from Oxford Brookes University, UK after completing the first nine papers and a research.

Speaking of this recent venture, Dr. Samanthi Seneratne, Acting Head of Department of Accounting, University of Sri Jayewardenepura said that she looks upon this opportunity very positively. She went on to say "ACCA has been working closely with our university. We are pleased to formalize our relationship , to share views and work towards the development of the accountancy profession, through mutual co-operation. The exemption scheme will serve as the gateway for better options and opportunities for students of both institutes".
