A drug addict allegedly removed parts of the rail track on the main line between Kelaniya to Wanawasala, leading to the derailment of a train and causing injuries to at least 10 persons and causing losses amounting to millions of rupees.
The General Manager Railways Ravindra Pathmapriya told the Sunday Times this was an unprecedented incident as such acts had not been experienced before, as no one had ever tampered with the rail track.
“The situation is bad; these kinds of acts should not happen. We complained to police and they are investigating the matter” he said.
The incident had occurred around 5.20am yesterday when the Colombo-bound train running from Polgahawela derailed in between Kelaniya and Wanawasala. Ten commuters had been injured by the incident and had been admitted to hospital.
One among the injured is in a serious condition.
The railway authorities described the derailment as a serious accident and said that the injured were being treated at the Colombo National Hospital.
Meanwhile, the person who allegedly removed the rods connecting the track and sold it for Rs 1,400 has been arrested.
