Kaduwela mayor accused of intimidation, court orders inquiry

Kaduwela Magistrate Aruna Indrajith Buddhadasa has ordered Police to investigate an incident where unidentified persons had allegedly threatened and damaged property belonging to a lawyer, and another incident where a person had lodged a complaint of criminal intimidation by Kaduwela Mayor Ranjan Jayalal.
The magistrate gave the order to the Kaduwela, Malabe and Welikada Police following complaints made by lawyers for the complainant that no investigations had been conducted regarding complaints lodged in this regard.
The complainant, attorney-at-law Nethrapani Dias, had gone with several persons representing an animal welfare group for a scheduled meeting with the mayor at his Kaduwela Municipal Council office. Mayor Jayalal though, had allegedly threatened them and had them thrown out of the premises.
Ms Dias had subsequently lodged a Police complaint over the incident, but thereafter, several persons who had arrived on motorbikes had allegedly followed her and caused damage to her property. Lawyers for the complainant alleged that Police were yet to take any action regarding her complaint. However, the same Police had taken steps to report facts to court based on a complaint Mayor Jayalal had made concerning the incident at the Kaduwela MC 13 days after it happened and without so much as recording a statement from those concerned, they charged.
Counsel appearing for Mr Jayalal refuted the allegations, insisting they were false.
Magistrate Buddhadasa ordered that written submissions be filed concerning the mayor’s complaint and ordered all complaints to be taken up again on July 3.
Kamal Wijesiri, Sandya Thalduwa, Sajith Tennakoon and Sanjeewa Gamage appeared for Ms Dias while D G P Karunaratne and Susantha Dodawatta appeared for Mr Jayalal.
