The Puttalam Hospital has been affected by the heavy rains, prompting authorities to close down some of the units.

At least two of the patients in the Intensive Care Unit had to be transferred to Colombo and the Galgamuwa Hospital while two others had to be shifted to another location within the hospital, due to flooding.

Acting Director of the hospital Dr. Lasantha Liyanage that it was difficult to continue to maintain the ICU, and they would need to re-check on the possibility of reopening the unit.

Soon after the flooding, he said that a team of officials were due to assess the situation.

The hospital was the only one in the vicinity to have an ICU with six beds.

The Hospital Development Committee said in any case the ICU needed to be refurbished and therefore urgent attention is needed.

Meanwhile the restroom for doctors and the toilets too require urgent attention, the committee said.
