India’s rapid Technology Growth in the last 10 years

View(s):

In the last decade, India has undergone a profound Technological Metamorphosis, evolving from a Back Office Service Provider into a Global Engine of Digital Innovation. From the launch of the ‘Digital India’ Mission in 2015 to the World’s Fastest 5G Rollout in 2023, the country has redefined its Economic Trajectory through Technology.

Today, India’s Digital Economy contributes nearly 12% to its GDP, with projections suggesting it will reach 20% by the year 2030. This growth is not just about Software Exports; it is about a fundamental shift in how 1.4 Billion people Live, Pay and do Business.

The Foundation : Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI)

The bedrock of India’s Tech Surge is its unique Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), often called the ‘India Stack’. A Decade ago, Financial Inclusion was a significant challenge; while today, India accounts for nearly 49% of Global Real Time Digital Transactions.

  •   UPI (Unified Payments Interface) : Since its launch in 2016, UPI has revolutionised payments. In April 2025 alone, it processed over 1,800 Crore transactions worth INR 24.77 Lakh Crores.
  •   Aadhaar and Jan Dhan : By linking over 1.4 Billion Biometric IDs (‘Aadhaar’) to Bank Accounts, the Government has streamlined ‘Direct Benefit Transfers’, saving over INR 3.4 Trillion by eliminating leakages.
  •   Connectivity : Internet Subscribers surged from 250 Million in 2014 to over 970 Million by 2025. Data Costs plummeted from INR 308 / GB in 2014 to roughly INR 9 / GB, making India one of the World’s most affordable Data Markets.

From a Service Hub to a Startup Nation

India has moved beyond Outsourcing to become the Third Largest Startup Eco-System Globally. The growth has been explosive. By the year 2016, entire India had only less than 500 Startups. In the present day, there are over 200,000 Startups.  Startups in 2016 provided less than 50,000 Jobs while as at now in 2026, Startups have provided over 2.1 Million Jobs.

Notably, this Innovation is no longer confined to Bengaluru or Delhi. Nearly 50% of recognised Startups now emerge from Tier – II and Tier – III cities like Jaipur, Indore and Kochi, signaling a Democratization of Entrepreneurship.

The Hardware Pivot : Electronics and Semiconductors

For Decades, India relied on Imports for Hardware. The last Five Years have seen a Strategic Pivot toward Domestic Manufacturing through the ‘Make in India’ initiative and Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes.

  •   Mobile Manufacturing : In 2014, India had only 2 Mobile Manufacturing Units; while today, it has over 300. India is now the World’s Second Largest Producer of Mobile Phones with 99% of Phones sold domestically being locally made.
  •   Semiconductor Mission : The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) which is backed by an INR 76,000 Crore outlay, has approved 10 major projects. Global giants like ‘Micron’ and Domestic Leaders like ‘Tata Electronics’ are building Fabrication and Assembly Plants in States like Gujarat and Assam.

Next Gen Frontiers : 5G, AI and Space

India is no longer just catching up; it is setting the pace in Emerging Tech.

  •   5G Rollout : Launched in October 2022, India’s 5G Rollout was the Fastest in the World, covering 99% of Districts in less than Two Years. By late 2025, India reached nearly 400 Million 5G Subscriptions.
  •   Artificial Intelligence : India filed over 86,000 AI Patents between 2010 and 2025, with Domestic Filings surging Seven Fold in the last Five Years. The ‘India AI Mission’ is currently building sovereign AI capabilities to drive Innovation in Healthcare and Agriculture.
  •   Space Technology : The unlocking of the Space Sector to Private Players has led to a boom in Space Tech Startups. Landmark achievements like the ‘Chandrayaan – 3’ Moon Landing have cemented India’s status as a Cost Effective, High Precision Space Power.

Challenges and the Path to 2047

Despite these strides, significant hurdles remain. The Digital Divide between Urban and Rural areas persists, though projects like ‘Bharat Net’ which has connected 2.18 Lakh ‘Gram Panchayats’ with Fiber are closing the gap. Cyber Security is another critical concern, with Cyber Crimes nearly doubling between 2020 and 2024.

As India moves toward its ‘Viksit Bharat’ (‘Developed India’) Goal for 2047, its focus is shifting from simple Digital Access to Digital Leadership. With a massive Talent Pool and a robust Digital Foundation, India is well positioned to lead the ‘Fourth Industrial Revolution’ Globally.

India’s Tech Story is no longer about ‘Doing it Cheaper’; it is about ‘Doing it First’ and ‘Doing it for Everyone’.
