Bank of Ceylon has donated 300 computers to the University of Peradeniya to support the restoration of facilities affected by Cyclone Ditwah, which struck Sri Lanka in November last year.

The university sustained damage to a number of its facilities during the severe weather event, and the donation was made to support its ongoing rehabilitation efforts. The computers are expected to assist teaching, learning, and administrative activities as the university continues its recovery.

The donation ceremony was attended by University of Peradeniya Vice Chancellor Professor Terrence Madhujith, Bank of Ceylon Deputy General Manager (Branch Operations) Priyal Silva, Assistant General Manager Buddhika Premarathna, Assistant General Manager Central Province  Damith Ekanayake, and B.G. Jayarathne of  Freelan Enterprises Ltd. Students, together with academic and non-academic staff members of the university, were also present.

Cyclone Ditwah, which affected many parts of the country during the monsoon in late 2025, caused extensive disruption to housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods, with more than one million people across multiple provinces impacted by the disaster.

Following the cyclone, Bank of Ceylon undertook a series of relief initiatives to assist affected communities. The bank distributed dry rations and essential goods valued at Rs. 50 million among people in the impacted provinces. It also contributed Rs. 500 million to the Government’s “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” fund, established to support communities affected by the disaster.

The bank further facilitated overseas donations through its Internet Payment Gateway (IPG), enabling contributions to the “Rebuilding Sri Lanka” fund from a range of countries. Its wholly owned subsidiary in the United Kingdom, along with its branches in Chennai and the Maldives, also supported efforts to mobilise foreign assistance for Sri Lanka, including through coordination with foreign high commissions.

Speaking at the event, Bank of Ceylon Deputy General Manager (Branch Operations) Priyal Silva said: “As the number one bank in Sri Lanka, Bank of Ceylon has consistently sought to fulfill its corporate responsibility, particularly during times of national difficulty. Extending support to communities affected by the cyclone indicates the bank’s continued efforts to stand with the public during such challenges. The donation of computers to the University of Peradeniya also reflects the bank’s longstanding support for the country’s education sector and its efforts to assist institutions recovering from the impact of the disaster.”
