Relaunch of astronomy and space study centre
View(s):The Astronomy and Space Study Centre is to be registered around June this year.
An official relaunch celebration was held in October 2025, which was attended by hundreds of students and around 25 teachers from various schools and universities at the Subodhi Institute.
“The centre would allow participants to be awed by the vastness of space, develop curiosity and to be humbled by the location of themselves within the space time fabric,” Siromal Fernando, a Chartered Structural Engineer, said.
“Considering that Sri Lankan education makes students passive learners even at the university level, the astronomy club would not only give a boost to astronomy in Sri Lanka but it will also stretch the mind.
It will not only develop their math skills but also allow students and participants to find inner knowledge, he said.
He said a lot of people look at the stars but have no understanding of it and therefore the centre would help develop thinking and the philosophy behind astronomy.
Academics who joined the centre would go on to impact the local Sri Lanka state curriculum, he opined.
Mr Fernando added that the centre would have a two-hour programme every other Saturday at the Subodhi Institute and open to students of different ages from A/Level to university.
The centre would hold astronomy workshops, webinars and space camps. The previous members of the centre would be the resource personnel for the participants and would act as lecturers. The centre is also keen on having an international astronomy conference. (PW)
