Chilaw General Hospital on a lifeline to recovery
View(s):The staff of the Chilaw General Hospital, led by its Director Dr Sumith Attanayake have been engaged in the challenging task of restoring the hospital badly damaged by Cyclone Ditwah followed by floods.
The hospital suffered extensive damage, and although weeks after the disaster the staff put up a valiant effort to restore services, they are still in the process of recuperating the institution.
The hospital premises was more than five feet under water, while more than Rs. 50 million-worth medicine as well as valuable medical equipment were destroyed, causing a total damage of more than Rs. 180 million.

The hospital’s director and the staff present at the time were able to save lives of nearly 300 patients under treatment at the time.
Surgical equipment, equipment of the staff, patients’ beds and the hospital’s scanner and its kidney unit were damaged beyond repair. As a result, doctors and other hospital staff were hesitant about resuming operations, unsure of how the collapsed system could be rebuilt.
However, contributions made by the Ministry of Health, the Minister Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa and various public and private institutions speeded the reconstruction of the hospital and the restoring of required facilities.
This week a meeting was held at the hospital to make a fresh appeal for support to continue with the reconstruction process and the replacement of equipment.
Dr. Udana Ratnapala, the consultant nephrologist in charge of the Renal Unit of the hospital has been coordinating the reconstruction and restoration efforts, backed by the staff.
The Army and other groups too assisted in the restoration efforts.
At a meeting held at the hospital with the aim of obtaining the support of various groups in rebuilding, the Hospital Director Dr. Attanayake requested everyone to contribute to the reconstruction efforts, paying special attention to the construction of a new pharmacy and the urgent construction of vital buildings that have been stalled.
The Director requests the public to kindly contribute their donations to the People’s Bank account 024-1-001-3-4796786 of the Hospital Development Committee.
