The process for integrating development officers serving in ministries/departments into the teaching service will kick off next week with the issue of a gazette announcing the competitive examination to enable the recruitment, Deputy Minister of Education Madhura Senevirathna said.

In all, 23,000 new teachers will be recruited from among the development officers after they face the exam, he said. Around 16,000 of this recruitment will be done this year.

Those who pass the exam will be given a teacher training course before they are recruited, he added.

The placements will be based on the urgency of teachers in the particular schools, he said, adding that none of the new recruits will be given the option of picking schools of their choice.

There are 42,000 vacancies for teachers in government schools and the government hopes to fill more than half of these vacancies this year, he said.
