The government will begin recruiting 23,000 new teachers to state-run schools within this year after legal hurdles were cleared in appointing development officers to these positions.

The 23,000 new recruits will be drawn from among those serving as development officers in government offices as well as new graduates, an Education Ministry official said.

They will be given training before being recruited to schools, he said. The training will cover 60 different subjects.

The new appointments will be made within the year after several petitions challenging these appointments that were filed in the Supreme Court were dismissed.

The official said that there are also around 6,000 who are undergoing training in the teacher training colleges and they will also help strengthen the teaching service. However, with 40,000 vacancies in all government schools, some vacancies will remain even after these requirements, the official added. (DWI)
