Amid increasing pressure from various quarters to either scrap or postpone the implementation of the new education reforms, President Anura Kumara Dissanayake on Friday (9) reiterated that his government was determined to go ahead with the controversial reforms.

Addressing the inaugural programme to grant compensation of Rs 5 million each for the construction of new houses to replace those destroyed by Cyclone Ditwah, President Dissanayake said the necessity of introducing new education reforms was a topic that had been discussed for a long time. “We have now moved to implement these reforms, but some are hurling baseless allegations and insults at the changes we are going to introduce,” he said.

“Whatever they try to do to scuttle these reforms, we will ensure that these changes are implemented,” he insisted.
