A delegation of lecturers represented Sri Lanka at the UNSECO Global Dialogue on AI Era School Education conference held in Nanjing Normal University in China from December 11-12.

The delegation consisted of Dr Gaya Jayakody, Head of the Department of Science for Technology at the Faculty of Technology University of Sri Jayewardenepura, Dr Asoka de Silva, Director of Science at the National Institute of Education and Eranda Lakmal, Senior Lecturer at SLIIT.

“The conference was not actually an academic conference but was more of a forum where ideas and practical experiences were exchanged, as well sharing of research findings, together with the development of knowledge and skills in K-12 technology and engineering education for children and youth,” Dr Jayakody said.

The conference brought together education policy makers, researchers and practitioners from over 20 countries including the United Kingdom, United States, Brazil, the Netherlands, Ireland, Namibia, Singapore, Qatar, Germany, South Korea, Brunei and Egypt.

According to Dr Jayakody, the purpose of the conference was to address how school curriculum must evolve in response to artificial intelligence and rapid technological development.

She said Sri Lanka stands to benefit from the conference as it can learn from countries similar to her educational system such as Ireland, Vietnam and Singapore, about those nations’ practices in AI adaptation.

The delegation contributed national perspectives to global conversations regarding curriculum development and highlighted Sri Lanka’s engagement with international efforts to strengthen mathematics, technology and engineering education in the era of AI.

The UNSECO Chair also held a dedicated discussion with the Sri Lankan delegation to explore future collaboration in curriculum development, research and capacity building initiatives.

In addition to keynote and country presentations, the conference also had a roundtable discussion that focused on the current status of girls’ participation in technology and engineering education that explored strategies to promote equity and inclusion in the STEM fields.

Dr Jayakody’s own presentation revolved around on the importance of developing students’ critical thinking, problem solving and reasoning skills so as to move away from rote learning. She also underscored that such skills are of even greater significance because AI can curtail the development of such skill sets.
