No return to landslide -prone areas; victims to get new land

The government will not allow those who were displaced by landslides to return to their damaged dwellings or lands if the areas are found to be vulnerable,
Essential Services Commissioner Prabath Chandrakeerthi told the Sunday Times.

He said the landslide-prone lands would be acquired by the government, and alternative lands would be given to those who lost their lands and houses.

Mr Chandrakeerthi said that amendments would be made to the relevant land laws to prevent people from taking up residence in landslide-prone areas.

“After the tsunami, the government gave land to those affected by it but did not acquire the lands in areas at risk from sea erosion or tsunami. As a result, the displaced returned to their old lands while retaining the new land,” he said.

To prevent such a situation, the government would acquire landslide-prone lands, he added.

Mr Chandrakeerthi said a post-disaster needs assessment would be done first, after which there would be a clear picture of the damage caused by the cyclone.

The assessment, to be done by the National Planning Division of the Ministry of Finance, is expected to take at least three months, he said.
