Displaced people asked to stay put until landslide threats are assessed
View(s):By Nidarshani Wickramasinghe
The National Building Research Organisation has stressed that no one in disaster relief centres should go back to their homes, or areas surrounding those homes, until warnings and red alerts for landslides issued for those areas are lifted.
People from the identified regions should not go back until necessary inspections are carried out by the relevant authorities.
Dr Wasantha Senadheera, Senior Scientist at NBRO said a full and confirmed assessment report on the structures in the disaster and landslide affected areas has still not been obtained. Some damages that occurred in several areas have not yet been officially recorded, he said, while there are isolated locations that still remain unassessed.

“People should vacate areas where clear manifestations of landslide are observed. We already made recommendations on that. Those who vacated their houses even if their houses were not showing clear manifestations of landslide, but due to possible risk, may return to their houses. But in areas where red alerts have been recommended no person is allowed to return to their houses or any other properties until these red alerts are lifted. They should stay in their designated safe locations until recommendations are made.”
“Currently priority is being given to essential services. There are many unreported and isolated locations within disaster affected areas. Due to prevailing flood conditions it has been difficult for our officers to access those places. However we are taking measures to carry out inspections in those areas as soon as possible. Thereafter District Secretaries will prepare a priority list based on our recommendations regarding resettlement. Only after that will the necessary decisions be taken concerning resettlement,”
Dr Senadheera added.
