As an interim measure to expedite the clearance of donated goods from overseas to communities affected by Cyclone Ditwah, Imports and Exports (Control) Regulations are relaxed for some 76 items including milk powder packets.

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake in his capacity as Minister of Finance, Planning and Economic Development, issued a gazette notification on Monday easing regulations to ensure donated relief items reach affected communities.

Accordingly, imported goods to be received from any foreign states, organisations or persons under the authorisation of the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and as donations to the Disaster Management Centre (DMC) will be exempted from the applicable regulations.

Under the directive, the Director General of Customs is vested with powers to release such goods after standardisation and quality control regulations without obtaining approval from the Sri Lanka Standards Institution.

The gazette notification also enabled importation of 150 brand new ambulances for the 1990 Suwaseriya Foundation.
