Kandy courts, others damaged by flooding
View(s):By L B Senaratne
The Kandy courts complex suffered severe damage when at least four of its record rooms were submerged by flood waters, a Justice Ministry official said.
A number of court records, some of them stored in the record rooms in the basement, were inundated with water for 3-4 days before they were retrieved.
The court staff in Kandy have made attempts to dry the documents and make use of some of them, while the Department of Archives’s support too is to be sought to look into the possibility of protecting some of the documents.
The Kandy courts complex was affected by a stream which runs along the complex carrying part of the water coming down the Hantana mountain and connecting to the Mahaweli river. As a result of the river overflowing in Getambe, the complex as well as the adjoining lawyers’ offices were flooded.
Court rooms in Mahiyanganaya, Negombo, Chilaw, Welimada and Samanthurai were also damaged by the floods that followed Cyclone Ditwah.
