‘Beginning’ begins

Introducing a new filmmaker, screenplay writer and the producer to Sri Lankan cinema, making of ‘Beginning’ cinematic venture started last week at the Joe Abeywickrema auditorium of National Film Corporation of Sri Lanka.

The main roles of the play are done by Pasan Ranaweera, Thumindu Dodenthenna and Dinara Punchihewa, a combination of young and talented cast includes Tehani Chitty, Hidaayath Hazeer, Lakshitha Edirisinghe, Tharusha Kumarasinghe, Warun Sethu, Shala Amerasuriya and Tracy Jayasinghe.

Set in 1990s Sri Lanka, the film revolves around Roshan, a ten-year-old who is born to a Sri Lankan family but brought up in a westernised backdrop. Returned to Sri Lanka and his inability to converse in local language he is been marginalised by the society. This creates a major challenge to his life.

Studying in an international school in English medium, the bullying and the harassment he is going through due to his ‘alien’ background, Roshan faces a major setback leading to isolation and depression. With loneliness and rejection, the young man goes through a struggle not knowing how to handle the dilemma. This psychological predicament creates the story of ‘Beginning’.

Produced by VISION 41 Production, cinematographed by Channa Deshapriya, line producer is Daminda S. Madawala, editor Tissa Surendra, production designer is Bimal Dushmantha and music direction is by Chinthaka Jayakody.

Assistant direction by Rushan Kulathunga, colour grading by Asanka Wickremasinghe, production manager is Chamara Nuwantha and costume designing is by Bhanu Fernando.

Make up department is handled by Rajitha Dikhinna and assistant art director is Maduranga Roshan.
