Sri Lanka celebrates World Fisheries Day this year with a three-day exhibition titled Aqua Planet 2025, held at the Nelum Kuluna premises in Colombo. The event, which began on Novemebr 21 and ends today, is free to the public and aims to raise awareness about the importance of sustainable fisheries while showcasing the country’s rich aquatic resources.

Organised by the Department of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DFAR) together with the Ministry of Fisheries, Aquatic and Ocean Resources and the National Aquaculture Development Authority (NAQDA), Aqua Planet brings together scientists, educators, conservationists, fisheries institutions and industry experts.

The Aqua Planet exhibition ends today

The exhibition features interactive and educational displays designed to appeal to everyone. Guests can walk through exhibits on marine and freshwater biodiversity, view life-size models and preserved specimens, and discover the diversity of Sri Lanka’s fish species. Colourful aquaria and ornamental fish displays will highlight the beauty of the island’s aquarium trade, while aqua-scaping demonstrations and responsible aquarium-keeping sessions will offer practical knowledge for hobbyists.

The exhibition also places strong emphasis on ocean conservation, with panels and videos explaining threats such as overfishing, plastic pollution and climate change, and showcasing the need for responsible practices to protect marine ecosystems.

Sections on seafood value addition will demonstrate hygienic processing, packaging techniques and new value-added seafood products, offering a glimpse into the industry’s growing economic potential.

In Sri Lanka, traditionally we know only a few methods of cooking fish, but the exhibition will showcase new culinary methods with seafood, says Kithsiri Dharmapriya, the Chairman of National Aquaculture Development Authority of Sri Lanka (NAQDA), who adds visitors of all ages are encouraged to make the most of this free event and immerse themselves in the fascinating world of water, life and the blue economy.
