Heavy rainfall across several parts of the country has caused minor flooding, mainly in the Kalu and Nilwala river basins.
Disaster Management Media Spokesman Pradeep Kodippili told the Sunday Times that multiple weather-related incidents have been reported, prompting response operations and warnings in several districts.
According to the Islandwide Water Level & Rainfall Situation Report issued at 3:30 p.m. on November 22, Kalu Ganga at Kalawellawa (6.58 m) and Nilwala Ganga at Panadugama (6.38 m) have exceeded their minor flood levels. Several other rivers, including Gin Ganga, Maguru Ganga, and parts of the Nilwala basin, remain under Alert status.
Two deaths have been reported, one in Katuwana, Hambantota due to the overflowing Uruboya, and another in Welimada, Badulla after a person was swept away by strong currents.
The Irrigation Department has issued a 24-hour warning for the Gin and Nilwala river basins and urged residents in Bulathsinhala, Mathugama, and Palindanuwara along the Kalu Ganga to remain cautious. Warnings have also been issued for parts of Galle, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Matara, and Ratnapura.
Four reservoirs Rajanganaya, Angamuwa, Deduru Oya, and Kukule Ganga have been opened, with the public advised to avoid bathing or crossing flooded waterways. In Matara, the DMC and Tri-Forces assisted A/L students affected by minor flooding to reach their examination centres safely.
Floods also affected several places in the Matara and Galle districts.
In some of the locations the Army provided support for the students heading for the G.C.E. A/L examinations.
Unibuffels and armoured vehicles were used to transport the students. Pix by Priyantha S. Dissanayake
