The National Movement for Social Justice (NMSJ) says there is no need to amend the Right to Information (RTI) Act, despite reports that the Government is considering changes. The group says the RTI law has already helped the public and should not be weakened.

Instead, the NMSJ says the Government should focus on the problems faced by the RTI Commission such as the lack of staff and resources, while some state institutions are failing to release information that the public has a right to receive.

The NMSJ also points out that the RTI system has supported anti-corruption efforts for years. Its General Secretary, Sunil Jayasekara, says these issues need urgent attention and hopes the Government will act soon.
