Opposition MPs led by Dilith and Dayasiri propose special parliamentary committee to probe JSC
View(s):A group of opposition MPs have submitted a proposal to Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne calling for the establishment of a special parliamentary committee to review the appointments, removals, transfers, and promotions of judicial officers made by the Judicial Service Commission (JSC).
A group of opposition MPs led by Sarvajana Balaya Leader Dilith Jayaweera and Samagi Jana Balawegaya MP Dayasiri Jayasekara handed over the proposal to Speaker Jagath Wickramaratne on Friday.
The proposal comes after opposition MPs raised concerns over the conduct of the JSC in recent times.
Explaining the move to hand over the proposal, Mr. Jayaweera said on his X account that they have observed that “since the current government came to power, it has taken various steps to undermine the independence of the judiciary.”
He claimed that political interference has influenced the removal, transfer, and promotion of judges within the judicial service. “In addition, for the first time in history, we are hearing news of judges being removed at the behest of the Inspector General of Police (IGP),” he further alleged.
In this context, Mr. Jayaweera said as the legislature of the country, MPs have a responsibility to stand up for the independence of the judicial system, which is why they had submitted their proposal.
