Governor of the Central Province Prof S B Sarath Abeykoon organised a programme to educate students on road safety.

Themed ‘how to avoid road accidents’ the programme included competitions held between 66 schools of the province, organised by the province’s Department of Motor Traffic.

There were essay competitions, oratory competitions and debates among students, with the awards ceremony being held November 20 (Wednesday) at the E L Senanayake Library with Governor Abeykoon as the chief guest.

Forty students received awards and certificates.

Road safety squads were first organised in the country by S B Senaratne, a senior prefect at Kingswood College, in the 1950s.
