As people across the globe celebrated World Science Day for Peace and Development on November 10, Sri Lanka extended the occasion into a full Science Week, using the opportunity to spark public interest in science, encourage innovation, and highlight the critical need to strengthen the country’s scientific capacity. Across the island, ministries, universities, schools and research institutes hosted a series of exhibitions, workshops, open days, student competitions, and public lectures designed to bring science closer to everyday life.

UNESCO, the UN agency that works to build peace through international cooperation in education, science, and culture, established World Science Day in 2001. In line with the global theme, Sri Lanka focused on “Building trust, Driving transformation: Science for Sri Lanka’s Tomorrow”.

Among the highlights of Sri Lanka’s science week were science exhibitions and innovation fairs organised by universities and national research institutes, offering students and the public hands-on experiences—from robotics and renewable energy demos to biotechnology displays and space science activities. Several schools held “Young Inventors’ Days” where students showcased low-cost engineering and ICT solutions addressing local problems, echoing the spirit of grassroots innovation. Research agencies of the government also opened their laboratories for guided tours, giving participants a rare glimpse into real scientific work on food safety testing, climate modelling, coastal research, disaster monitoring, and more.

A walk was also held in participation of all the science and technology-based organisations under the Ministry of Science and Technology.
