Potato farmers in Welimada protested, calling on the government to stop import of potatoes to create a market for their produce.
The all island potato farmers association held the protest in front of the Keppetipola dedicated economic centre on Monday.
The farmers residing in Boralanda, Welimada gathered at Kappetipola state bus depot held placards, banners and marched in protest towards the economic centre.
They, also in protest, avoided bringing their produce to the economic centre despite the shops being open. Though farmers from outstation areas brought other vegetables, the merchants were unable to buy vegetables they complained.
The farmers’ chanted slogans such as ‘Ministers are sleeping’ and called on the president to take over the agriculture ministry.
However, when the framers attempted to enter the economic centre for the second time, Welimada Police OIC, Chief Inspector Sampath Abeywickrema did not allow protestors entry, and instructed the organisers to hold the protest outside the economic centre without obstructing the road. The OIC also instructed the farmers to conclude the protest before 12 pm as advanced level exams were due at that time.
