The Meteorology Department says strong winds and up to 100 mm of rain are expected to continue until Tuesday, and is advising people to take necessary precautions.

Director Forecasting Meril Mendis told the Sunday Times that according to their forecast the depression that developed about 900 km away in the deep sea, south east of Bay of Bengal would intensify into a deep depression today and further develop into a cyclonic storm by tomorrow.

According to him strong winds and 100mm rains as well as rough seas would persist until Tuesday. However he said the situation could change with the trajectory of the cyclonic storm. According to the current forecast the cyclone would move north west towards Andhra Pradesh.

“Last week too Sri Lanka experienced heavy rains due to another depression condition, Therefore floods and earth slips could happen,” he warned.

Mr Mendis said that since the ground was exposed to prolonged rainfall landslides could occur, while the ground water levels could increase gradually leading to floods.

He also added that tree fallings and branches breaking off from trees may occur due to strong winds.

Yesterday the Meteorology Department issued a strong advisory to the Navy and fishing communities not to venture into deep sea in the north east areas until further notice, due to heavy showers and rough seas.

In addition, while naval and fishing communities were warned not to venture into shallow sea in areas off the coast extending from Kankesanthurai to Batticaloa via Trincomalee, until further notice, those engaging in activities in shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Galle to Pottuvil via the Hambantota area were asked to be vigilant.
