The Suraksha student insurance programme has been upgraded to provide more benefits to students.

Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited and the Ministry of Education signed a new agreement this week. Secretary to the Ministry of Education Nalaka Kaluwewa was present.

“Suraksha” is a free insurance scheme offered by the Sri Lanka Government to all students in government schools, government-approved private schools, special needs schools and pirivena schools. It covers medical expenses, personal accident, and compensation for death of parents.

Benefits provided to students under the scheme have been increased as follows:

Health insurance: In-patient treatment benefits – Rs 300,000 (government/private hospitals), out-patient treatment benefits – Rs 20,000, and critical illness benefits – starting from Rs 1,500,000.

Accident insurance: Total permanent disability payment of Rs 200,000, permanent partial disability – Rs 150,000 and temporary incapacity – Rs 25,000 to Rs 100,000.

Students from families with an annual income of less than Rs 180,000, and students from families under the Aswesuma welfare scheme will be entitled to Rs 75,000 in the event of the death of a parent/legal guardian.

The maximum amount allocated for a single death is Rs 225,000, and the amount will be divided equally among all students in the family. This insurance cover is available separately for the deaths of both parents and legal guardians.

Under the amendment of the agreement on 09.10.2025, new benefits will be available for events occurring on or after 01.09.2025.

The annual income considered for the provision of the benefit in the event of the death of a parent in 2024/2025 is Rs 180,000. However, after 01.09.2025 the annual income considered for the provision of the said benefit will be revised to an income less than Rs 240,000.

Students taking long-term medications for various diseases were not covered under this programme previously. From 01.09.2025, students taking long-term medications for diseases falling under the category of critical illnesses, and the following diseases, have been provided with the opportunity to receive benefits up to Rs 20,000 as external benefits.

These medical conditions include epilepsy, nephrotic syndrome, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, ulcerative colitis, Crohn’s disease and rheumatic valve heart disease.

The insurance scheme will also provide an opportunity to receive benefits up to Rs 75,000 for a wearable device (scoliosis brace) to correct spinal deformity and for the cost of ear, nose and throat devices (recommended by an ENT surgeon).

It will also cover benefits for lumber guards and cervical collar devices provided only in the event of an accident, also in the event of a non-accidental illness (recommended by a specialist doctor).

When obtaining benefits, all relevant documents including the claim form must be certified by the school principal and submitted to a regional branch of Sri Lanka Insurance Corporation General Limited. (DWi)
