A transformative environmental education programme titled “Nature and Children” was successfully conducted on 28th September 2025 at the Sri Sheela Wimala Dhamma School of Sri Bodhirajaramaya, Yabaraluwa, under the purview of the Biyagama Divisional Secretariat.

The event was organised by the newly incorporated Nodutulokaya Organization, a community development organisation, as part of its mission to empower children to become future custodians of the environment.

The programme was graced by Mr. Sampath Dayaratne as Chief Guest, with the technical session conducted by Ms. Yashodha Polgolla, Environmental Educator and Climate Change Consultant. The event also saw the active participation of community leaders including the Chief Monk, Grama Niladari, Police Officers, Dhamma School teachers, and parents, demonstrating strong community support.

Through interactive sessions, children explored both global and local environmental issues such as climate change, improper waste disposal, soil erosion, and the decline of indigenous environmental practices. They engaged in group discussions to propose practical, community-based solutions including waste segregation, tree planting, and the revival of traditional eco-friendly methods. Special attention was given to local measures to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.

A key outcome of the programme was the formation of a student-led Nature Society, empowering children to continue their efforts in environmental stewardship within their school and local community.

This initiative highlights the powerful role of children in driving sustainable change. With strong collaboration among educators, parents, local authorities, and community stakeholders, the Nodutulokaya Organisation remains committed to nurturing a new generation of environmentally responsible citizens in Sri Lanka.
